Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition in which the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes compressed or pinched as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist.
The symptoms include pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and fingers. If conservative treatment such as splinting, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medication do not provide relief, surgery may be recommended to relieve the compression on the median nerve.
The procedure to fix carpal tunnel is called a carpal tunnel release. The key steps of the procedure include:
- Pre-operative preparation: Before the surgery, the patient will undergo a thorough medical examination and may need to take certain medications or stop taking others. They will also be informed of the risks and benefits of the surgery.
- Anesthesia: The patient will be given local anesthesia or regional anesthesia to ensure they are asleep and pain-free during the procedure.
- Incision: The surgeon will make a small incision on the palm side of the wrist and create a small opening on the transverse carpal ligament, which is the band of tissue that forms the roof of the carpal tunnel. This will enlarge the carpal tunnel and relieve the pressure on the median nerve.
- Closure: The incision will be closed with sutures or staples.
- Post-operative care: After the surgery, the patient will be taken to a recovery room and will be monitored for any complications. They will be given pain medication and will be taught exercises to regain strength and mobility in their hand and wrist. Physical therapy will also be important in the recovery process.
